Dave Jackson: Ask the podcast coach for 08/01/2026. Let's get ready to podcast. There it is. It's that music that means it is Saturday morning. It is time for ask the podcast coach where you get your podcast questions answered live.

I'm Dave Jackson from the schoolofpodcasting.com, and joining me right over there is the 1 and only Jim Collison from theaverageguy.tv. Jim, how's it going, buddy?

Jim Collison: Greetings, Dave. Happy Saturday morning to you. Great to see you. Great to see Anthony from the Route 66 podcast. He came out, he was in the Omaha area, gave me a ring.

Not really. He emailed me, said, Hey, you want to get together? We had breakfast yesterday. Anthony, longtime listener. Great to see you.

Thanks to, thanks for reaching out to me. Great to meet you. And that's kind of fun. That's kind of fun to get together and

Dave Jackson: Did you tell, did you tell the wife, Hey, in the event I don't come back and I'm dead? It was Anthony?

Jim Collison: She didn't know, actually. That was probably as smart. She should have forwarded the email and some of those kinds of things. We went to Louis M's Burger Lust here in Omaha. Burgerlust.

Burgerlust. Yeah. That's the name of it. And they make really good burgers. If it didn't if it wasn't in the title, but they also have fantastic breakfast and is the place where every single old person in Omaha goes for breakfast.

You know? You know those places? Oh, yeah. Yeah.

Dave Jackson: There are few of those in Cleveland. And I know what you had probably to, wash down the gravy and grits or whatever you got.

Jim Collison: You get pretty good coffee.

Dave Jackson: Yeah. Some pretty good coffee. And that coffee pour is brought to you by our good friend Mark over at podcastbranding.co. Look. You know what's funny?

Last week, I said, Andy's a graphic artist, and it's really good because you want someone who's also a graphic artist. I forget what I said, but I totally botched it. But number 1, he is a graphic artist. But the cool thing is he's a podcaster, and I've used him repeatedly for my album artwork. And if you need more than an album artwork, you can have him design your website.

You could go look at congressional dish. It's a great example of that. He's been doing this for 30 years, and he's been podcasting since 2013. And what he's gonna do is he's gonna sit down with you. You're not gonna get this from a guy on Fiverr.

He's gonna sit down with you. Let him use his marketing brain to come up with, great images that are gonna match the vibe of your show. He'll give you a couple examples. You pick your favorite, or you can just have him tweak it if you need it, and, you're gonna end up with a piece of artwork that just go that's exactly what I was looking for. So when you're ready to look great, go over to podcastbranding.co.

Jim Collison: And, of course, big thanks to our good friend, Dan LeFebvre, over there based on a true story based on truestorypodcast.com. We talked about this last week. He did a coming soon post. It has come today. I think it or maybe it was yesterday.

The Odyssey, I have tickets to see this tonight.

Dave Jackson: So Oh, then I won't seen it? Did you I

Jim Collison: have No. No. No spoilers.

Dave Jackson: Do you want my review?

Jim Collison: Yeah. Do it real quick. That's yeah. What do you think?

Dave Jackson: It's 2 words. Yeah. Too long.

Jim Collison: Yeah. Well, if you wanna know more about it, I'm not gonna I I don't know. Dan, could I should I see your should I listen to your podcast before I go to the movie? I know Dan's usually in chat or not. But The Odyssey available now based on a true story based on a truestorypodcast.com.

And as always, Dan, thanks for your sponsorship.

Dave Jackson: Yeah. The thing that I thought, about the show or about the movie, number 1, and we could all learn from this lesson because there was a lot of hoopla about the casting. You know? This this person is this, and and, if you look at history, this person wouldn't have the shade of skin, blah blah blah, yada yada yada. And my favorite this is a great lesson for everyone.

Before you lose your mind, maybe go look at whatever people are losing their those people are in the movie maybe 4 minutes. Maybe. And I was like, man, that was a lot of hoopla for somebody who showed up on screen for 2 seconds. You know? It's like but, the the fun part of it is because I I the reason it got me going was, a, I heard people that lost their mind, then they saw the movie, they said, actually, it was pretty good.

And then I saw, Matt Damon being interviewed, and he explained how there's very little CGI in this. Like, there's a there's a Cyclops in the movie. I'm not it's not a spoiler if you've ever seen the, like, that's always the thing people talk about. And it's a big giant 36 foot puppet. And, yeah.

So there's

Jim Collison: A lot of practical effects.

Dave Jackson: Yeah. And the fact that there's 1 scene where they're on a beach that is black. Like, the the stone on the beach is black. Well, that's real. That's a place.

Mhmm. And so I was like, okay. And then when I walked out of the movie, I go, would I have cared if it was black, though? Like, if it was CGI? I'm like, mhmm.

I was like, so.

Jim Collison: Jim Well, you know, we talked about spoilers, Dan was saying. Yeah. There's, there's, they talk about it in the, in the podcast. But I know the story. This is not a new story.

Right? This is not like Project Hail Mary or the Marvel

Dave Jackson: Oh, that's thing. A great flick.

Jim Collison: Or Inception or, you know, some of those kinds of movies where it's an original story. Right. It's like going to a historical movie, like Saving Private Ryan. Now, you you kinda know, like, what happens on Omaha Beach? We kinda know who wins.

Dave Jackson: It's like Titanic. I'm pretty sure I know how that movie ends. Right.

Jim Collison: Yeah. So those spoilers maybe don't count on that. I know the story. I I think I was forced to read this book when I was back in school. So anyways, it's interesting that way.

But Dan, thanks for covering that, and it'll we'll see how that goes. Dave, tonight, I'll give you next week, I'll come back and and give it we can do my my review of the Odyssey.

Dave Jackson: Here's the 1 thing I did like about it, where superhero movies, you know, there's a lot of things where people are holding up their hands and, you know, they do their their special eye thing or whatever was like on superhero tools. Then you go into Star Wars, and everybody's got the lightsaber and the pew pew. You know? It was nice that people are, like, using sticks and swords and stuff to beat each other up. I was like, there you go.

That 1, I I could believe that. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.

Jim Collison: I'm looking forward to it. I'm looking forward to it. Nice. It's always fun to get out, you know, get out, see a movie, do something different.

Dave Jackson: The the 1 thing I've never done this in my life, and I'm still surprised I did it. No popcorn. No Coke.

Jim Collison: I'm gonna do that tonight. Yeah. I'm gonna do that tonight. Was thinking because that you know how many calories? And I get the which is even worse.

Like, it literally they it's just straight sugar. I might as well just like to tap the old

Dave Jackson: Get the vein going.

Jim Collison: In with sugar. It's just a cup of diabetes. So, you know, you're anyways.

Dave Jackson: Before we, hop into the, the fun filled, you know, main topic here, I have to I am finding new tools in StreamYard, which are great fun because that's right, kids. Where's well, that's not it. It's the next tab. That's right, kids. A new day That's an alarm.

It's this 1. 0, you love a live show, don't you? There we go. We have a new awesome supporter. He's back.

The 1, the only Jeff C, The show Creator News Live. He'll be on the wheel of names a little later. It's the show that keeps you up to date on what's happening in the world of social media. We talk industry experts, innovations, creators, and storytellers about the latest social media tools, tips, and tactics. We broadcast live so you can ask the questions that matter most to you and your business.

So Jeff c, the 1, the only. You might know him as that guy with the beard. Yep. That's him, Jeff C. He's amazing.

You can find it at socialmedianewslive.com. And if you wanna check out all things Jeff C, go over to Jeff C and C is s I e h. Jeff, thank you so much for being an awesome supporter. And, that website, Social Media News Live. So now I have to figure out That's a good way

Jim Collison: to that's a good way to get your pod we have a new podcaster you wanna talk about, I mean, it's a good way to do that is get on this show. I mean, we got a couple, 3, 4, 5. I know. What's our download? What do you think?

Where where are we at on a weekly basis, do you think now? We haven't talked about that in a while.

Dave Jackson: It's probably I would say between 3 and 400. I know before the Apple thing, which it just kills you. Like, we were closing in on 1000. Mhmm. And then the Apple thing came, and it was like, and I was like, well.

Jim Collison: So what's CPM? Okay. Let's just say as an example, if it's 400, right, and they're paying 20 is it $20 for that month?

Dave Jackson: For the month. Yeah.

Jim Collison: For the month. And it's every month. Right? I mean, it's and you're it's not like it's the same people all the time, but would you consider that a pretty healthy CPM?

Dave Jackson: Yeah. Yeah. In fact, speaking of CPMs, what's kind of fun about this is I saw this at, over on Reddit, and this guy was talking about CPMs on I don't know if that's gonna work as much. If I do this no? Alright.

But this guy says, hey. I'm not a huge podcast, which might be part of the problem, but we make enough from ads to cover our hosting fees. Even on our lowest month ever, our CPM held around $2. So that's $2 per 1,000 downloads, which is 0.002¢ per download. And in recent months, it even had been averaging higher.

Then July happened, and our CPM dropped to 0.38. 38 per 1,000 downloads or 0.00 I guess that would be 38¢. 0 0 0 3. I'd have to never do math live. Yeah.

Jim Collison: Yeah. Our trap The AI does, though. It's like, oh, I just did some mental math, and you're like, you're a freaking calculator. Stop doing mental math.

Dave Jackson: Yeah. And, basically, he says, I pushed back and asked for specific information about whether anything has changed with the ad marketplace, but I'm still waiting for a response. Trying to figure out whether this is a specific to our show, maybe a glitch or a calculator issue, or whether Podbean has changed something in their ad marketplace, lost advertisers demand excess, blah blah blah. But 0.38 CPM simply isn't sustainable or acceptable. And I'm like, yep.

That's that's no fun. And I know at Libson, where I have my better Dave show. Now, again, that's a show that gets maybe 80 downloads a month. I went from $3 CPM down to a buck. And I just told people, I go, I'm not a genius.

This isn't like, you know, Brilliance. If supply and demand still works, it used to be there weren't that many shows that could have dynamic ads. And then everybody built a dynamic ad insertion tool. So now if you go to, you know, show a and go, I want to pay you a dollar, they go, I'm not taking that. I need at least 5.

And then they go to the next person. They'll go, we'll give you a dollar, and that person goes, oh, we'll take it. It's just a race to the bottom. It's like, have fun with it.

Jim Collison: No. Always is. Always. And we we would hope it would at some point would balance out. But it is, I mean, it is a race to the bottom.

There's so much inventory out there. This is the problem, right, in a lot of ways. There's so much inventory and not enough, not enough people doing it. So it just drives that price down to something ridiculous. And we just accept it, or I shouldn't say we, but some people just accept it and do it.

I'd stop doing it. I would just stop the the right now with with the dynamic stuff. And and I know you're thinking like, well, it's better than nothing. No. Nothing's better in your podcast, to be honest.

Right?

Dave Jackson: And and if you're if you're trying to grow your audience, I know, especially depending on because what happens when CPMs go down, what do people do? Well, now I have 3 pre rolls instead of 1. And then I have 3 mid roll ads, and I have 3 post roll ads. And now it's like, wait.

Jim Collison: It's just junk too. Yeah. Junk ads. Like, stop doing it. Stop taking stop taking that money for junk.

You're actually losing like, you're turning you're you may be turning away listeners who are like, Oh, God, that show is full of ads. And the ads are terrible. Like, you know, instead of, like, protect, protect your listeners, don't do it. Stop, you know, stop. It's just like, you know, computer prices right now.

Like, if you don't have to buy a computer, don't. The prices are insane. Don't feed the beast. The same thing, just the opposite on with with ads. Stop feeding the beast and accepting like, because when you accept it, you know what the market does?

Oh, Okay, well, we'll just keep doing it. Right? And so just stop taking those crappy dynamic ads and stop taking the lowest possible prices for these things. Find your own, like right now, the best, I think the best is, is definitely getting like a sponsor or a, you know, having like someone involved in the podcast from a standpoint of like, they're, they're paying to be on it. I don't know why I'm struggling with that term.

But that's the right, that's the right way, I think, right now to do it and just avoid dynamic. It's bad. It's really bad. Yeah.

Dave Jackson: Have a question from Ralph. He says, What would you do? I'm starting a new daily live show Mhmm. And we'll stopping we'll be stopping my daily recorded show. Since I hope so, he's going from prerecorded to live, basically.

Since I hope to bring the audience over, should I just start posting to the same RSS feed? I would yeah. I think I would. If it's the same content

Jim Collison: Even if it's close. Like, if you're stopping 1 and starting another, even if they're close, I would absolutely just keep the same RSS feed. Like you're, why, why risk there? It's free advertising to those people. And if the, if they go away, well, they go away.

That's fine. They probably would have gone away anyway. Probably never would have got them. So I would absolutely, even if it's close, doesn't have to be exactly the same. You can do some transitionary episodes in there if you want.

That'd be a, friends, we're, we're gonna be transitioning this feed. It's gonna be live now. We're kind of doing this. If you want to unsubscribe, that's fine. But if you want to stay around and hear it, that would be great.

Put out a 1 or 2 minute episode to transition this thing. Dave, what was interesting, we, when we went at Gallup, we went from Theme Thursday to the CliftonStrengths podcast. Same podcast, but they wanted a different name. And it was, I couldn't use the same RSS feed. I tried, and they were like, No, we're switching.

So we made a transitionary episode for that Theme Thursday to say, Hey, come, come join us over in the CliftonStrengths side of things. We'd love to, you know, love to see you over there. And that, that thing got a lot of listens. Like it was, yeah, I mean, it was people, you know why? I mean, people get to the end, and then there's 1 more, and they listen to it.

And they go, Oh, we had a lot of folks, those pod, those older podcasts get recommended by some of the classes that these folks are in. So they go listen to it, then they listen to the end. And they're like, Oh, it's nice transitionary. So you could make a transition. In this case, you could make a transitionary post that's not doesn't send them somewhere else.

It just kind of lets them know, hey, we're we're going in different directions. A minute or 2. Don't make it a long 1. Just a minute or 2 and throw it in the feed.

Dave Jackson: Yeah. That's that's it. I would let the audience know, hey. You're still gonna get daily content. If you wanna participate in it, join me at blah blah blah o'clock where I'll be live every day, but you'll still get this.

So if you you know and then, go from there. Always let the audience know. And then like Jim said, keep it short and sweet. I did a, somebody was on the my fix my podcast service last night. He spent 2 minutes asking for feedback at the beginning of the show, and I'm like, not at the beginning.

I go, you gotta hook them. And I go, and you're asking for feedback when you haven't gotten any yet, when you haven't given them any content to comment on. I was like, if you're gonna do it, I like, 15 seconds. Hey. If you if you enjoy the show, I'm doing the show for you.

Please leave any kind of comment at blahblahblah.com slash comment. I go and that's it. He was really going into detail, and I'm like, dude, it was it was a minute 20. I go

Jim Collison: Well, but better than nothing. Like Right. Better than not asking, but it could be better at the end. I don't know. I you know, Dave, that it'd be interesting to hear if he got any feedback on it.

Dave Jackson: He doesn't. And the this is in my travels, I have I have 2 examples. Well, I I have plenty of examples of people going, hey. We'd love your feedback. Go to blah blah blah feedback, and they get nothing.

Jim Collison: Yeah.

Dave Jackson: Where Michael Hyatt is I kinda stole his his style would be like, today, we talked about working for a boss that is a micromanager. Have you ever worked for a micromanager? We'd love to hear your comments. Go out and leave a comment on the blog, and he'd say exactly where it was. And he got a ton of comments because it was very specific question.

And and he made it really easy to leave a comment back in the day. And so and for me, I do the same thing with the question of the month. I even say how to answer the question. Like, here's where it is. Here's and then there's a deadline.

That's another fun thing. But Michael didn't have a deadline, but he asked very specific questions, and he got very specific answers where I think if you go, so what'd you think of the show? If you get feedback, it's gotta be, it's good. Okay. Or it's like, I it's alright.

You know? Like, okay. Well, I can't fix. It's alright. So, you know, here's Jody has a thing here.

She says, I think going back to Ralph's thing, I think it'll be much easier. Jim, what say you?

Jim Collison: Live being much easier than than edited. They're the same amount of work, just to be And so, well, depends how much you edit, right, from that standpoint. If you are, if you were doing a recorded show and a lot of edits and then publishing at that, a lot, who knows what that is, right? But in some cases, that's a little more work that you're putting into it. If you're going live, and you're just cutting off the ends and putting it out there, it depends on how good you are.

Right? If you're, you're not good at live, or you have lower expectations, or higher expectations that's what I should have said if you have higher expectations, you're gonna want to come back and edit that live. If you're just gonna want and done it, it can be a lot easier. I mean, that's, Home Gadget Geeks is a 1 and done. I did 12 years of podcasts at Gallup that were 1 and dones.

Like, and they, the expectation from the audience was always it was gonna be the recording of a live episode. And I think live brings an incredible tension to both the guest and the host that make it better. Like you're a little sharper, you're not quite like you're always listening, or you should be, you're always listening, or, you know, or what have you. And so I think it's, I think recording it live and then taking that live and doing what you want with it is a great way to do it. Dave, you don't do that at school podcasting.

You're, that's all you behind the scenes. I don't know how, but I don't know how you keep the tension up, but you do you do a good job of it.

Dave Jackson: I am talking to my invisible friend across the

Jim Collison: desk. Yeah.

Dave Jackson: Yeah. That's it. Another thing, Todd the Gator says, that don't let the live low numbers at 1st dissuade you. Live percent. Yeah.

Because we have 21 people. Well, we just lost somebody, so, apparently, we're boring right now. 40. We had 21. We're down to 20.

Damn. And if we get 400 people, that's I don't again, don't do math live, but that's 4 or 5%, something like we get a lot more people yeah. You'll never get as many people live as you do. Back.

Jim Collison: 20 one's back.

Dave Jackson: Alright. Thank you.

Jim Collison: Thank you.

Dave Jackson: So happy.

Jim Collison: Thanks for coming back.

Dave Jackson: He's checking his email.

Jim Collison: Live is unique from that standpoint. I mean, you gotta get people to come at a specific time. I mean, it's like streaming versus the old way of of TV. Right? When remember when you it's 08:00.

I gotta go watch Family Ties, right, or whatever. And right?

Dave Jackson: Mallory! Yeah.

Jim Collison: Exactly. So yeah, you're just always going to get lower numbers on the live. We, unless, like, we have made a real effort at Gallup to let our folks know to come and join us live. And lately, I went from live numbers of like 50s 50, 75, 100 to like 500. Like we're getting 500 people to show up live, right?

We put a lot of effort into that, though. Right? There's a lot of effort, a lot of emails, a lot of reminders. It's in the newsletter. Like we do all those things to get it there.

Now the trade off is we put all this emphasis on live, but we took away the I shouldn't say we took away, but we didn't put the we took the emphasis away from the recorded versions of it. And guess what those numbers did? They went down. And so we're, are we getting more because we put an emphasis on live more? It's a question in my mind, right?

I would prefer to do both, make a big deal about both live and the recorded version. And then let the chips fall wherever it's convenient for people.

Dave Jackson: And then, Ralph has a question here. So Jim, I think that's Ralph. Yeah. Yeah. You would do a special episode instead of mentioning it a few times on the existing show.

Jim Collison: Do both. I would do both. So shows leading up to it, you can mention it, make a special episode for it as well. Yeah. I wouldn't you know, you don't wanna you don't wanna bore them with it.

You know? Don't do it too much. What's that number? I don't know.

Dave Jackson: Yeah. There is a thing if you really go into live and why we're doing it and this and that, that they don't care. That you were very much into the how the sausage is made. They they don't really care about that. Yeah.

And so you could just say, hey. You know, we're we're we're taking the show live. If you'd like to participate, it's every Tuesday or every day at blah blah blah o'clock slash live. And then, the beautiful thing is if you wanted to, because I know Ralph's on Captivate, that's a fun little 10 2nd pre roll. Hey.

Starting, you know, August, whatever, we're going live. Yada yada yada. And then, you know, we're gonna call the we're also doing a rebrand. I always use KFC. People don't understand what the word rebrand is.

Like, I remember when it used to be Kentucky Fried Chicken, and now it's KFC. It's the same location. It's the same building. It's the same greasy chicken. It's just a new name.

That's all we're doing, and we're live. So, because in the end, I the only show that I think can get away with it is if you're doing like, we do a podcast about podcasting. So we could talk, you know, like, oh, did you know in StreamYard that if you are restreaming a like, here, if I if I bring this up right? So, for those not watching, I just put my NoteJoy on the screen here. And if I go back over to Jeff's website, because I'm sharing a screen, there's a thing in in Chrome that says, hey.

Share this tab instead. So when I do that, you're now looking at, of course, create, socialmedianewslive.com. And I was like, oh, okay. So if you're using StreamYard, you can easily switch back and forth between any tabs. So later when we go to the wheel of names, I don't have to unshare my screen and then reshare.

I can just go, hey. Click on the share this tab now. So that's a behind the scenes stuff, which normally would bore the snot out of people, but the people on this show are podcasters who might be using StreamYard to go, You know? So that whole 9 yards. So most of the time, the audience doesn't care.

Jim Collison: Jeff just got mentioned twice. So, Jeff, thank you for being an awesome supporter. You should be too.

Dave Jackson: Yeah. Okay. There you go. And Ralph is working. He had a cohost lined up, and then they got cold feet.

I'm not sure what happened there. Randy says a cohost without chemistry with you is a recipe for failure. Yeah. After my cohost Jimmy passed away, his daughter tried to step in, and it just didn't work because the chemistry wasn't there. Man, I've it I knew it was gonna be different, but John C.

Dvorak passed away, and Adam Curry, again, just let the audience know, didn't make a big deal. He goes, look, kids. I'm tired. He goes, I've been dealing with funerals and well, he's like, I'm taking 2 weeks off. And he goes, I'm gonna come back with a new cohost.

He goes, the show will continue. He goes, but for the next 2 weeks, there's another it's people from his audience.

Jim Collison: Oh, I thought it'd be Rod Greenlee.

Dave Jackson: That's right, Adam. And so they had 2 brand new people come in to do the show that do a show that's very that show is called no agenda, and their their show was something like angry something people, whatever it was. But it's very similar. It's no agenda light. And those guys came on, and I was surprised at because I was like, oh, new people.

And the 1 thing that I wouldn't have done is they spent a lot of time at the beginning saying, here's how we got here. Like, this is like, we have to explain why you're listening to us, and they really didn't need to do that because Adam had already said, Nick the rat and whoever the other guy is are gonna be filling in for 2 weeks. That's all. You've been crowned by the pod father. Yeah.

And then put that like, hey. If you wanna know more about us, we do this show. Put that at the end because I was, like, waiting to hear about doctor Fauci news, and they're going on about, then, you know, we did this and the thing, and I was like, man.

Jim Collison: An email, and then here, we had this meeting. Or But the

Dave Jackson: the thing that was so weird is just different voices. And if you think, I wish I had a really deep voice, this guy's voice is it's like Sam Elliott doing a podcast. He's like, well, and doctor Fauci was doing the thing. I'm like and I was like, I'm I can't make my voice go as low. And to the point where if you're in the shower listening to the podcast, even though it's cranked and the speaker's right by your head, I almost had a hard time understanding what he was saying because his voice was ridiculously I mean, it's cool.

It's low, and it's deep, and he could probably do voiceovers. But I was just like and it was me going, wait. Is is this your brain because it's not John and Adam, or does this guy's voice just like, I wasn't really sure, but I was just surprised at the just the culture shock of, oh, it's not it's not the same. It's never gonna

Jim Collison: be the same. No. Right? John, John was unique. You're just, you're never gonna get that chemistry.

I mean, Dave, it's, it's like when I'm out, right, and you've got to have guests in, the chemistry changes.

Dave Jackson: It's, yeah.

Jim Collison: And it's just different. Right? And so you've got to get that, you know, you got to get that 1. Mike Wieger used to join me on Home Gadget Geeks all the time. And he, you know, it's dad.

He got, he had a bunch of kids. And it was like, he's like, You told me this was going to happen, and it's happening. And so I've gone on a series of rotating guests. Now, rotating guests also become like a regular guest if you do it enough, right? If you're a host, yeah, if you do it enough.

And so the listeners have kind of, they pick and choose their favorite hosts that come on, and they'll make sure they, when Aaron is on, everybody loves Aaron. So everybody comes on and, you know, they're, they're like, Oh, yeah, love the Aaron episode. And, and then they kind of pick and choose. So that becomes a, for Home Gadget geeks now, that's become a regular thing, right, of these rotating hosts. So you could do that too.

Todd the Gator had mentioned in the chat too, you can use that rotating guest host idea to find your next, Use it as a little bit of a see where it goes and bite them back a couple times. It's a great way. And then at some point, like what you did with me, and I was like, Hey, do you want to do this on a, like, should we do this next Saturday? We, I don't know if we had a long term plan, not a 10 year plan.

Dave Jackson: That's Right? For

Jim Collison: So, you know, it's, it's a great way, Todd, that's a, that's a good thought. And and, Ralph, you may wanna I'm sure you're thinking about that.

Dave Jackson: I think that's what he's doing. Yeah.

Jim Collison: Rotate through some and see see who turns up. And you may never you may never find 1.

Dave Jackson: Well, I reached out to him. I said, you know, no agenda pulled somebody from the audience. I said, you might put it out to the audience and go, hey. You know, here's what I'm looking for. You know?

But at least those people would know you don't have to explain what the show is to them. Now if it's somebody who's never had a podcast, that could be a bit of, you know, getting them confident.

Jim Collison: Yeah. So, Dave, you need some ego in it. And I think sometimes when you pull from your audience, there's a little bit of a, a little bit of that fanboy thing that goes on where it's, it's kind of like, Oh, I love this show. And I love the, you know, it's, we hear in our chat, you know, folks say, In the morning, right? Isn't that their, isn't that their thing?

In the morning, right? You've, you're a fan of that. And then you get on there and you have a little bit of impostor impostor syndrome. You're like, Oh my god, I'm talking to Adam Curry. You, listen, John C.

Dvorak never said, Oh my god, I'm listening to Adam, I'm talking to Adam Curry. He said, I'm John C. Dvorak.

Dave Jackson: Right.

Jim Collison: Right? I'm a big deal. And in some cases, you need that ego in there. So especially early so that that guest host is comfortable, like, I'm not here because, Oh my gosh, it's Dave Jackson. I'm in awe of you, Dave Jackson.

I don't want to say, No. I'll say, Dave, I think you're wrong. Right? You know, you kind of need that, you kind of need that ego and that attitude in there to make the thing work. So pulling from your audience, I would be super careful in that, in that scenario, because it's, you gotta, you gotta pull from somebody who's got some ego.

Dave Jackson: Yeah. Jeff says the feedback from doing live shows is what makes it fun. Totally. That's probably the reason why we're still doing this 10 years later. For sure.

About asking a question and not getting an answer. When you do it live, somebody in the chat room will be like, oh, I don't believe with that. Or I you know? Jen says I love seeing the same live people in the chat each week. Yeah.

We have, you know, somewhere between 20 and 30 people here. And, yeah, we all know each other and, coach Dave and all sorts of people. Yeah. And then, Randy says, always mention anything from the listeners live or recorded and close the feedback loop to build that community. Yeah.

Anytime you can do that. And then Todd the Gator saying keep them involved. It will make them feel like a community. Yeah. The only thing that

Jim Collison: It's happening right now. Right? It's what's happening. They're all commenting on this right now. Like, this is a perfect example of it.

Dave Jackson: Yeah. Yeah. And at this point, it's the only hard part of that is I just it's you know, some things get put on screen, and then other times the other thing we do, because there's a delay getting things to YouTube, is there are times when I will be kind of moving on to the next subject, and then someone will drop a really good point. And I'm like, oh, well, going back to such and such, so and so. So there's a lot of, like Yeah.

2 step forward, 1 step back, 2 steps forward, 1 step back. And that's fine. That's just the way it is. I do announce. I have a pre roll.

So whoever comes up on the wheel of names this week will it'll say, hey. Today's feature supporter is blah blah blah. And then at the end at the end of most of those, it says, and I pulled this from Laverne and Shirley, ask the podcast coaches recorded in front of a live studio audience. And then just so people know, hey. This is you know, if we I do my best not to do too many things where I'm like, hey, Jim.

Look in the upper right hand corner. Yeah. I try not to do that and explain what's going on because, in my head, this is still an audio 1st podcast. It just happens to be on video. Right.

But, you know, Ralph says I have 2 cohosts to pick from this week after doing some, specific shows. Both are really talented, so it's going to be a tough decision. Rotate them for a to say that that really, that's not a bad idea.

Jim Collison: Let's rotate them. See how that goes.

Dave Jackson: Yeah. And then, yeah, there was a show called there was a network called Trek dot FM, and Todd DeGater says, don't forget. You can also have great guest cohost to give them a trial run. He said I did that for 3 months before deciding on my permanent cohost. Yep.

That's what Howard Stern did when they fired Jackie the joke man. They had, man, probably 8 or 9 people sit in his chair, and then finally, Artie Lane got it, and he would have kept it except he was a heroin addict and kept falling asleep on air. That's not a good way to keep your job.

Jim Collison: He needed some heroin AM. You know? Do you remember that commercial from Saturday Night Live? Heroin AM when you need to when you need to still work the day and not fall asleep.

Dave Jackson: Yeah. Ralph is saying, would you use StreamYard instead of ECAM? I just think ECAM is far more versatile. It is. It's absolutely ECAM will do your breakfast for you.

I love Ecamm. I love everyone over there. I love Doc like that. But for me, all the extra features that it has right now, I I don't need. And it's you know?

Jim Collison: Couldn't equal confusion. And for for most people, the more options, the more confusing it is. If you can manage all those options and you love it, do it. If you want something easier, I think StreamYard's a lot easier. Now it's because I grew I mean, I've been on StreamYard from day 1.

We they offered this thing. We jumped on it. But it it's a lot I my opinion is it's a lot easier. Right? Easier is in the eye of the beholder at this point.

You may, oh, that's easy. I get, okay, fine. Do it then. Like, do it.

Dave Jackson: That is part of it is we use StreamYard for years. Right. And then when I got a Mac, I was like, oh, I can use Ecamm, and I've I've always wanted to play with it. And I swear when I when I logged into my StreamYard account even because I was I went back to their free plan. And when I logged in, I swear there was like a like, oh, I remember this, and all my stuff is here and blah blah blah.

It's like, does it look as cool? Maybe not. But I'm like, it's 2 talking heads of middle aged guys, like, you know.

Jim Collison: I think it looks great. Like, I'm I since we've come back to StreamYard, I'm like, part of me is like, Oh, thank you. Because 1, I understand it. 2, it it it, it created some uniformity in the way you do the the way you set stuff up. Right?

So our screens are the same size. They're in the exact place they need to be, you know, some of those kinds Watch. Of

Dave Jackson: We're gonna go crazy. We're crazy. Oh my gosh. Put

Jim Collison: it back.

Dave Jackson: Jim is on the left. I'm on the right. We can't have that.

Jim Collison: Put it back. But the cohosting capability inside StreamYard, because I'm a StreamYard user, is so native to me as well. So if all of a sudden something happened to you and you couldn't do something, I could run this no problem. So for our unique setup, I like being back on Streamyard.

Dave Jackson: Yeah. Ralph says, I'm doing a 90 day trial. There you go. And then Jeff C you know Jeff C. He's from, socialmedianewslive.com.

Is him at all? He's he has a he did a he has rotating guests. So there you go. Yeah. It's live is a different beast.

I will tell you that. The 1 thing that, talking StreamYard versus Ecamm, if you keep wondering why does Dave look to the left now and not into the camera, because if I were to put this on my teleprompter, it is so small that I and I could pop out the chat if I wanted to, and I and that I might try that. But it's it's live is a different beast because, a, you have to be okay when you click on a button and something doesn't work or you click on the wrong button or you forgot to take your slides back to slide 1. You just have to be able to go, oh, and in your brain, you're going, oh, you idiot. You forgot to do this, and you just kinda la la la la la.

So live is a different beast. And if you're taking calls, there's a book called

Jim Collison: Profit from your podcast?

Dave Jackson: Oh. No. Beyond powerful radio. It's thick, and it's expensive because it's used as a college book. Valerie Geller.

And she talks about when you're doing live and you're taking live calls, you have to be ready to kick people off the air. Mhmm. Mhmm. You have to because otherwise, I I always point to the sports people, and they're like, well, you know, what do you think about the Browns chances this year? Oh, they need to get a new quarterback.

That guy's an idiot, man. He doesn't know what he's talking about. Yeah. He's you know, well, he could be. We could use the backup guy.

Oh, that quarterback's an idiot. He doesn't and, like, all of a sudden, dawns on you. That's all that guy has. And it's time to go, hey. You know, Jimbo, thanks for the call.

And you kick him off and you Uh-huh.

Jim Collison: Yeah. I was on a call this week. It wasn't it wasn't a podcast call, but it's just a regular call. But, you know, 30, 35 folks on the call. And I had, I was taking questions and I had somebody, you could just sense it, right?

You're like, Oh, this is not appropriate for this con now it wasn't inappropriate, but it was a question that wasn't really good for this group, and it was detailing and somebody needed to vent. Right? And you're like, Oh, and you couldn't, I can't, you can't really, like, goodbye. It wasn't even my call. They invited me in for it.

Right? But yeah, you do, you have to, you have to be able to, I mean, I had a guy, we, in the old days of Blab, I had a guy come in with no shirt on, you know, and you're like, And this was, we were using it. It was Season 2 of Theme Thursday. And we were, this was a professional setting. Right?

And he came in with no shirt on. And now he was it was my fault. He came in with just his head, and I'm like, hey, are we gonna see more of you? You know, like, you wanna bring your camera down a little bit? He was like, woah.

He brought it down, and I could have swore it was gonna go all the way down. I was, I was gonna get the, you know, roar roar. And there, my hand was on the kick out button as this was happening. Like, Okay, where are we going with this? I said, Did you just wake up?

He's like, No, I've been up for a while. Just kind of chilling. Like, put your shirt on before you put your shirt on before you come to a podcast. But okay. You know?

So that sometimes happens.

Dave Jackson: Yeah. Awesome supporter, Jen, from Bourbon Barrel Podcasting. I was a call screener for radio back in the day. People would lie to me just to get on the air. Oh, I wanna ask Jim about this.

Then he gets on the air, they're like, bubba bui. And then they rung. So, Ralph says I have someone who'll be screening the calls, probably going to use software for live calls. Yeah. Collinstudio.com also does video now.

That's the 1 we used back in the day when we would take when I'd be like, hey. 6494. You're on with Dave and Jim. And I had the big monster board because we had to have 3 mixed minuses. What a mess.

Yeah. It's, and then Jeff says, or Ralph is saying, yeah, it's a heavier lift with a daily show. Yeah.

Jim Collison: That's Yeah. Yeah.

Dave Jackson: Yeah. So it's Or

Jim Collison: rotate them weekly.

Dave Jackson: Yeah. That's true.

Jim Collison: 1 week 1 week on, 1 week off. So rather than at every other day.

Dave Jackson: Here's here's a good 1. He goes, both my candidates have their own businesses and shows, so that's good. So that's that's the thing. So, yeah, Z Man says, hey. I got in late.

Well, you'll have to listen to the recording. For you. Yeah. That's it. As always.

But, you know who's never late? Our awesome supporters. You know? They're awesome. You can be awesome.

If you go over to ask the podcastcoach.com/awesome where you know who's gonna be there later? The 1 and only. Yeah. Don't be wait. Where's the where oh, you know why?

Because I have oh, we've learned something. If you put slides on, you can't use the share the screen thing. But we'll talk about Jeff in a 2nd just because he's a good guy. But these are people like, Craig over AI goes to college. I think Chris is in the chat room, so castahead.net.

Financiallyconfidentchristian.com is, Ralph, Sonic Cupcake, our good friend Ed. You could be any of these people. If you wanna see them, we've got a whole list over at askthepodcastcoach.com/awesome. And the show is also brought to you by the schoolofpodcasting.com where you get courses, coaching, community. You can use the coupon code coach.

And if you're like, I'm not really sure about that, you can go to schoolofpodcasting.com/6weeks, and we are doing again the podcasting in 6 weeks course. And this time, it's crazy. You ready? It's free. Last time we charged you a buck, this time it's free.

Yeah. We got a fair number of people that signed up. And so this is really just gonna be a lead magnet. It's not the same course that you would get if you sign up for the school of podcasting. So for everybody else who's like, wait.

What? But it's it's it's it was fun. So we're gonna do it again. We might actually start, again, a little baby course on how to grow your show because that is the question that people want. But Yeah.

Check it out. Schoolofpodcasting.com, and, it's owned by Podpage. Yes. School of Podcasting is, I guess, the educational arm now of Podpage. We build pretty websites for people that don't wanna learn how to code.

Check it out at trypodpage.com. And if you need more Jim Cullison, he's right there. See him. But if you need more, you can check out Home Gadget Geeks by going over to theaverageguy.tv. And I will be November 7, I will be over with doctor Brad, and the 1 and only Cliff Ravenscraft will be at podindie.com.

This is a 1 day conference. It's super affordable. In the show notes, I'll put it in fact, if you, oh, I don't have it set up yet. But if you, you there's a coupon code that will be in the show notes. If you go back to last week's episode there, we'll have a coupon code, and it's already super cheap.

So it's a a great event. Definitely can get your stuff. Yeah. Jen says, yay. Pod Indy.

Yes. Jen will be there. And so the and, Ralph, I'm gonna answer your question in a 2nd. It's time for the featured supporter of the week. But before in fact, if in theory, if I go to this, we can talk.

Nope. I gotta remove see, this is the the little when we talked about things, these are slides. So I have to remove a slide to put up a website. So before we do the awesome speaker of the week, we do again wanna thank the brand new awesome supporter, and that is Jeff C over at socialmedianewslive.com. Great show.

And, again, if you like live shows, that's a good 1 to check out. But we're gonna go ahead, and he's over here already. The Wheel O'Names, I added Jeff this morning. And so will it be our new awesome supporter? Will it be, looked at Ralph.

He's got 2 on the board. You can find all the Ralph stuff at askralph.com. It could be will will Spybrary come back and win 2 in a row? Will it be Jody from the audio, great podcaster, audio branding podcast? Here we go.

We're spinning it. And survey says, I'm paying attention because Spybrary was up when I hit go. Come on, Jody. Yay. Jody's due for a win.

Yay. Audio branding, the hidden gem of marketing. It's a great show. I've been on it twice. And if you need a voice over, her voice is like butter.

Like butter. She's done voice over for Coke and all sorts of famous brands. It's amazing. She's a great voice over artist. Check out her show.

I'll have a link in the show notes. And, Jody, thank you for being an awesome supporter. So, if you I've now learned I gotta do this and do that. If you'd like to be an awesome supporter again, it's super easy. If you're like, you know, those guys saved me some time.

They saved you money. Maybe we saved you a headache. Maybe we made you smile. Well, go over to askthepodcastcoach.com/awesome and be an awesome supporter today. And as you see, when you are a new supporter, we shout you out a bunch on the next episode.

So thanks to all of our awesome supporters. And Ralph had a question. He said, hey, Dave. Why is it free versus a dollar? And here's the super simple question.

We wanna see what happens. It's simply an experiment. And after that, it might go up by, like, a $100 or $50, or we're just playing at this point. We're experimenting. And we're like, hey.

We got enough people to sign up for the school of podcasting as paying members to do it again. Okay. And then he was like, should we do I go, I'm not a fan of free. I go, free people don't buy stuff. And we're we talked about it.

He's like, well, there's 1 way to find out. And I'm like, well, we we already did a free version of the school of podcasting, and that didn't work. So we're just we're just throwing stuff at the wall. There's only 1 way to find out. It's 6 weeks.

It's an hour a week of my time. It's not a huge commitment if it fails miserably. And, we got some other we're we're like, if this is the thing, we're gonna start having live courses, and then there's just a big old push at the end. It's it's the Amy Porterfield business model. You do a webinar, then at the end, you ask people to join your membership site.

And so we'll see how that works.

Jim Collison: Yeah. I'd go 9 I'd go $10, just to be honest. Like, I'd never do a dollar. That's just

Dave Jackson: Well, I just wanna make sure they had a credit for

Jim Collison: yeah. Yeah. No. For sure. For sure.

But if you're gonna get them if you're gonna get them out to pay for a dollar, I think you'd probably get them out for $9.99, you know, for $10 or even for $20 My daughter calls $20 an adult dollar now. She's like, Yeah, that's $20 as an adult dollar. Just something, it's good that you're testing it, right? Get an opportunity to see what the, what the appetite is there. Think sometimes we use free the wrong way, and it gives the wrong impression.

And it's really, really tough to give away something for free and then pull it back. And so, you know, to eventually start charging for it. So I don't know. There's a whole there's a whole methodology behind it, but I don't I'm I'm also not a fan of free.

Dave Jackson: Yeah. You'll you'll hear me when I talk about it. I'm like, this is an experiment. Don't expect it to be this way all the time. But if we can It's tough get to pour back.

Jim Collison: It's just once you say it, it's tough. You get that value proposition in somebody's head. And, you know, I think better if it had been $49.99 before, and then you offer a steep discount on it to be able to bring it back to that as opposed to, We don't have a price for this yet. I'm not saying this is what you're doing, by the way, not rebuking. But if you, if you say, We don't have a price for this yet, we're going to try free 1st.

Guess what? It will always be in people's heads. Free.

Dave Jackson: Free. Yeah. Right. This used to and it's like yeah. Well, that's why when the music biz, here we go.

We submitted hey. It was a great course. Really enjoyed the 6 weeks. Got a lot from it. There you go.

Jim Collison: You always trust a guy named Jim.

Dave Jackson: So Jim That's it. Yeah. That's that's my rule in life. So even more if they call themselves James because it just sounds more official. So but when the whole Napster thing came out and then Apple was like, okay.

$2 for a song. It had to be enough money. Do you remember that? When you could buy

Jim Collison: It was 99¢, wasn't it?

Dave Jackson: Was it 99¢?

Jim Collison: It was 99¢.

Dave Jackson: They came

Jim Collison: in a dollar.

Dave Jackson: Yeah. I just remember it wasn't much. I remember they

Jim Collison: It was cheap, but there was a lot of things to buy at a dollar. That was the thing. Right? You could you get a lot of value. Most people would buy a bunch at a dollar as opposed to yeah.

And then, you know.

Dave Jackson: Yeah. We're gonna go back a little bit. We got a question here from the z man. Other than timing, what's the most challenging aspect for selecting a potential cohost? Well, Jim kinda said this already, the chemistry, And I think the passion.

This is and and the other thing is the family. And what I mean by this is, like, god bless Sarah because she loses her husband every Saturday morning. Mhmm. You know what I mean? And so you've gotta have the family that's willing like, a lot of people when they were talking about John C.

Dvorak, they said thank you to the family for sharing 6 hours a week. Yeah. That guy was on a microphone. And so there are times when you might have the right cohost and the right passion and the right chemistry. And then a month into it, the support on his side isn't there, and the nagging then can start to deteriorate the performance.

Yeah. And it just you just don't wanna be the thing that breaks up a marriage. So

Jim Collison: Yeah. And it shouldn't last forever. Like, we've had us listen, you and I have been able to do this for 10 years, and it's great. But that's not everybody's experience. I had Mike Wieger for about 7 years, 6, 7 years.

And he was like, I gotta go. I gotta go and do this. Andrew Morris was on the podcast originally. And I, you know, we got 4, 5, 6 years out of him, and he was just like, Hey, my kids are, you know, coming along. I need to pay more attention to that.

Pat him back as a cohost from time to time. I think sometimes in podcasting, we think the expectation is, This is going to go on forever. I love this. It's gonna, Well, at some point, Dave, you and I are going to have to be like, hey.

Dave Jackson: This this show has almost come to an end

Jim Collison: A couple times.

Dave Jackson: A couple times. You're like, do we still wanna and he's like, okay. Do you wanna because there I forget what happened. I think I was coming back from a conference, And I I I could have done the show on Saturday, but I chose to sleep in. And that was a very dangerous choice because I was like, oh, man.

I forgot what it's like to sleep in on Saturday.

Jim Collison: It's so great. It was like, oh, yeah. I It's it was a 09:30 for me, 10:30 for you. That's we can still sleep in. I mean, for me, you sleep in.

Dave Jackson: Well, for me, I'm doing show prep at Yeah. 08:30. You know? So it's like That's true. I could do show prep, you know, some other time or whatever.

Jim Collison: But Yeah.

Dave Jackson: Yeah. It's, you know, so

Jim Collison: Not gonna last forever. Nothing lasts forever. It's not gonna last forever.

Dave Jackson: Yeah. So keep that in mind. It is it's, having a cohost, I I would I well, I've tried. I remember once when Jim couldn't make it, and I was just gonna use the chat room as a cohost, and that did not work well because I'm doing like, right now, I'm reading the chat as I'm talking to see if there's anything else. And so what I'm I'll just talk out loud.

So I'm I'm still talking here, and I'm making my point. But behind the scenes, I'm gonna go over and look at NoteJoy and see what else because we've got 7 minutes left. So I can't really pick a really in-depth topic, but we could do something like this 1. And so now I can go in and say, hey. Let's, add this screen to it, but that's the wheel of names.

And say, Jim, have you ever done do you have any kind of, Patreon program for your Yeah. Do you? For sure. So this guy is asking, anyone seen Patreon member perks that you really liked or have your own Patreon with different membership tire tires? Yeah.

Tears. Easy for me to read. He says, I'm thinking of putting exclusive content and other members perks for my audio podcast. I'm still in the early stage, so I don't have a huge following, but I do have some core fans. And he says, I'm thinking about exclusive bonus episodes, behind the scenes photos and videos, video version of the podcast, the ability to suggest topics, that could be huge.

Ask me anythings in live streams. So do you have any advice on the the only the 1st 1 that always comes to my mind when I think of this is be careful shipping coasters and buttons because

Jim Collison: Or shipping anything.

Dave Jackson: Yeah. Because when the guy in Switzerland wants a coaster, you're like, oh, it cost me 39¢ for the coaster, but I gotta spend, you know, $9.50 to ship it to Switzerland.

Jim Collison: That's cheap. It's probably be $40 to get that now. Yeah, super expensive. You know, what I've seen done the most successfully that, that sentence didn't make sense what I've seen done successfully, or the most, is making your, and you kind of do a little bit of version of this, making these levels a identity in themselves. So you say, Hey, I have, and we'll use the Platinum, Gold and Silver.

I don't like those, but I'll use those because that's what it's come to mind. Hey, for my Platinum subscribers, and they get this special recognition in being that I watch, YouTubers are really good at this, where they'll have, at the end of the show, they'll show, as Dave's throwing that up there, right? Good, good timing, Dave. The did you do that or did it automatically

Dave Jackson: I just did that. I was like, well, while you're talking about that, and it was like, oh, wait a minute. I need to have I need to add Jeff C. To this now.

Jim Collison: So Yeah. Yeah. I know. And so it's a good way to have an identity for those supporters, patron, Patreon, patrons, there we go, patrons. We're getting towards the end of the show, so my brain is getting a little smooshy.

And, and so they, the, the level in itself is some identity. And so I've seen that work really, really, really well. Works great on YouTube, but these folks, they don't, they, sometimes they get special access, they get early access to things, they may get early access to information or their own newsletter. That's actually something I should think about, to be honest with you, with my, with my patrons is having, they get an exclusive newsletter as well. But that, that's what I think I've seen work the best where they have an identity, like that level has an identity, if that makes sense.

Dave Jackson: Well, like, today, when we get done with the show, there's live group coaching at the school of podcasting, and patrons get invited to that. The things that I don't understand when I hear people do stuff because it's gotta be something the audience wants. And so when I hear things like, oh, well, you'll get the unedited version of the show. And I'm like, wait. So the things that aren't good enough for public that you cut them, you're gonna let me like, no.

I don't want that. Or they'll go, we'll do bonus shows. We'll do extra episodes to which I go, do you have enough time to do a show that's as high in quality as your normal show? Because that's 1 of those where I see people, like, they're on show number 3, and they're like, yep. You can get bonus episodes.

And I go, okay. So let's say you get 1 patron. You know, I gotta do an extra show for 1 person. And I'm like, is that a you're like, maybe yeah. So it's Yeah.

Jim Collison: We add, like, so my our patrons get early access to the full show. So I don't edit it anyway. So it's not like that's, I'm not editing things out. They just get early access to the pre and the post show. Now, not in every pre and post are there significant things, but sometimes there is, right?

And so it's a good opportunity to hear all of the banter that goes on instead, and you get it a day early. Is it worth it for $5? People pay it. I think they do it because they want to be nice to me. Just to be right.

I have a relationship with all those folks.

Dave Jackson: Well, that's it. I wouldn't say do a dollar level anyway. If somebody will give you a buck, I'll give you a 5. Yeah. Yeah.

I do 5.

Jim Collison: Five's cheap now. I think at some point, we're gonna need to go to 10 with the with where inflation is going. Yeah. You know, everything's super expensive.

Dave Jackson: Todd the Gator had a question, and I accept that's not it. But he asked me, what is my preshow prep?

Jim Collison: Yeah.

Dave Jackson: I I go to Reddit. I have and and the beauty of well, here, let me just share my screen. So what I'm sharing is my NoteJoy. And so you can see here are all these things that I will now like, I'm not gonna use Patreon perks because, well, we just did that. So I can delete that 1 here, but and we did Podbean, so I can delete that.

But I have all these things that I've seen from Reddit. This is from, Alex Sanfilippo. We might talk about that the next time YouTube comes up. I got all these different questions, and I just come in. I go into Reddit.

I take a screenshot. I paste it in here. And this is an and this is why this list is long because we have, of course, if I get my mouse to go back, nope. That's David Lee Roth. It's, this oh, somewhere in here, it's the world's greatest chat room.

And so I rely on that a lot. You guys bring in questions. So Oh, yeah. That's really it. So from from there and then it's just a matter of you'll now see where it says episode 5 88.

So I changed the background color. I set up pod page to go to askthepodcastcoach.com/live and, all that whole 9 yards. Yeah. Ralph's saying I could use Claude to do that. It takes, you know, setting up the show takes 5 minutes, if that, and, you know, I just because don't you

Jim Collison: don't need the co work. You can just use a regular version of Claude. I I did the, I did that this week at Phil Hawthorne on from the Home Assistant podcast. And he, before we got there, I was like, Hey, go back and, and look at the show notes. This is why your show notes might be important.

Go back and look at the show notes for the last couple shows. What have they been talking about? And so it brought some things back for me. And then I was like, Okay, well, this is interesting. Go deeper on this.

And by the time I was done, I was like, Okay, make Show Notes for me just for Phil. I'll copy and paste them into my Show Notes piece. And I got some really good, like some questions to ask and then some filler stuff for the back, like if, hey, if you need some additional information here. So, Ralph, you're right. It's a fairly handy tool to create show notes with, especially if you're like, in this case, it was a single guest.

So it's super handy. Jen has a way too. I like your way too.

Dave Jackson: Jen has a great point. Ad free episodes are the best perks. Yep. I would agree

Jim Collison: with that. Yeah. If your ads are obnoxious, it's particularly maybe a good reason to create an obnoxious ad.

Dave Jackson: We'll take 1 more comment here before we wind up from, of course. The world's greatest, Chad. The z man says, I'm thinking about having a good friend of mine as a cohost. Be careful with that because a lot of times he's your best friend because he thinks just like you, and that does not make a good cohost because you're like, hey. What'd you think of it?

And he's like, I liked it too. Hey. What'd you think about this? I liked it too. And, also, I've seen we did an episode about this.

Go back to ask the podcast coach. Look for the episode where me and Jim are dressed up like Ernie and Bert. We talked about what happens when things go bad with cohost because I've seen really good friends, and then all of a sudden, they were lucky enough to start a Patreon or whatever. And they're like, what do you mean it's not 50 50? Blah blah blah.

And then it just you're and now your best friend of 37 years is gone because, you know, a $137 came in via Patreon. So don't do that. Be very careful, and just Jim and I have the uncomfortable conversation, every year to kinda go, hey. We still doing it the same way we do it. Just just it's 1 of those things.

I hate to see a a friendship go down the tube. So, Jim, what is coming up on the average guy dot TV over at Home Gadget Geeks?

Jim Collison: I just said that a minute ago. Phil Hawthorne joined me. He's from the Home Assistant podcast.

Dave Jackson: Oh, that's right.

Jim Collison: We spent some time talking about Home Assistant and a little bit of AI in there and working with Home Assistant. Phil's just a great guy. Head out and listen to it right now. And I will say if you're gonna have your best friend do it, make sure you are careful of your best friend's girlfriend, because it used to be yours.

Dave Jackson: There you go. I used to sing that song many moons ago. Jen says, get a prenup for your pod our good friend, Gordon Firemark has podcast prenup.com. So on the school of podcasting, we are talking about ingredients in your podcast. And I am gonna be spotlighting not the whole episode, but 1 of them is nostalgia and how sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't.

In the case of Moana, you know, that movie's the original movie's not even 10 years old, and they're like, hey. Let's dust off the memories from when you were a little kid. I'm like, well, when I was 9 and now I'm you know, it's like so nostalgia is it's really powerful, but you gotta it it can't be the only string you're you're plucking. So we're talking storytelling. We're talking content over at the school of podcasting this week.

So thanks, of course, to my new well, not my new friend, but our new awesome supporter, Jeff C over at socialmedianewslive.com. Check it out. Links will be in the show notes along with that coupon code or pod indie. You can go over to podindie.com. I need to memorize that.

It's in the show notes. If you just look at last week's. But we're here every Saturday, 10:30AM eastern, 07:30. What is your time again?

Jim Collison: No. 9 09:30 central. 08:38 30 mountain, 07:30 Pacific.

Dave Jackson: There you go. We'll see you next week. Take care.
